Mosquito Net Challenge of Hope Drive
Malaria, the most common fever in Uganda, continues to claim countless lives, especially among children. The Sapphire Africa Foundation is conducting a drive through Tammie Parker who is spearheading a crucial challenge to raise 200 new mosquito nets for families in rural areas who cannot afford them for $5 per net. These nets serve as a vital tool in the fight against malaria, a disease that poses severe health risks to children and adults alike. By supporting this campaign, you can make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by malaria in Uganda. The Dangers of Malaria to Children Malaria remains one of the biggest killers of children in Uganda. When infected with malaria, individuals experience high fevers, diarrhea, vomiting, headaches, chills, and flu-like symptoms. Children, in particular, are at greater risk as the disease can rapidly worsen, leading to coma and even death. Due to their limited acquired immunity, children under 5 years old are most vulnerable to malaria’s devastating effects.
Malaria and Pregnancy Pregnant women face increased susceptibility to malaria due to changes in their bodies that lower their previous level of resistance. The consequences of malaria during pregnancy can be dire, including severe anemia, miscarriage, premature birth, or stillbirth. Infants born to mothers who had malaria during pregnancy are often underweight and more susceptible to infection or death during their first year of life. Regular malaria checks during pregnancy and prompt medical attention, when signs and symptoms arise, are crucial for both maternal and infant well-being.
Importance of Mosquito Nets Sleeping under insecticide-treated nets is a proven method to control malaria and anemia in both children and adults. These nets act as a physical barrier, preventing mosquitoes from biting and transmitting the malaria parasite. By providing protection throughout the night, mosquito nets significantly reduce the risk of infection. Additionally, using nets helps alleviate the financial burden on households, reducing expenses associated with malaria treatment and funeral costs.
Through different fundraisings, Tammie Parker has already raised 25 nets meaning we need more 175.
