Leading the Fight Against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Sapphire Africa Foundation is at the forefront of the fight against Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in sub-Saharan Africa. As one of the leading support organizations for Duchenne and other muscular dystrophies in the region, we are dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families affected by these debilitating conditions. With a steadfast commitment to compassionate care, empowerment, and advocacy, we are working tirelessly to bring hope, dignity, and opportunity to some of the most vulnerable communities in Africa.
Sapphire Africa Foundation currently supports more than 200 families across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Rwanda. We provide critical services including physical therapy, access to mobility tools such as wheelchairs and walkers, and essential physiotherapy support to children living with DMD. By addressing both the physical and emotional needs of our beneficiaries, we help children gain mobility, comfort, and improved quality of life while offering their families much-needed relief and guidance.
We understand that medical care alone is not enough. Many caregivers in our program face immense financial strain while supporting a child with Duchenne. That is why Sapphire Africa Foundation has developed sustainable livelihood initiatives, helping families establish small businesses to promote financial independence. From training sessions to start up support, these micro-enterprises empower caregivers to earn an income while caring for their children at home.
Education and capacity building are central to our mission. We conduct regular training programs for caregivers and parents, focusing on holistic care for children with DMD, including specialized diet plans, rehabilitation exercises, and proper mobility support. In collaboration with healthcare facilities, hospitals, and other non-profit organizations, we work to expand access to qualified care and ensure a wider reach for our services across rural and underserved areas.
The need for DMD support is growing rapidly. In recent months, we have received an increasing number of calls and inquiries from countries across Africa, highlighting the widespread need for care and awareness. While our vision is to extend our services to more regions and families, we are currently constrained by limited resources. We remain hopeful that with increased donor support and strategic partnerships, we can scale up our operations and bring assistance to every child who needs it.
