In Nakaseke District, near Luweero in central Uganda, lives Nightrose a strong woman whose life reflects both the challenges and the quiet strength of many persons with disabilities in underserved communities.

For over 30 years, Nightrose has lived with a disability that began in her early twenties, shortly after giving birth to her daughter. Since then, mobility has been one of her greatest challenges. Today, she is cared for by her devoted grandson, Kasule, who supports her in nearly every aspect of daily life.

When the team from Sapphire Africa Foundation first met Nightrose, her situation was critical. She had been using a severely damaged wheelchair that no longer provided basic support. It was broken, unstable, and unsafe, leaving her unable to sit comfortably, move independently, or participate in everyday activities.

For Nightrose, the lack of a functional wheelchair was more than a mobility issue it was a barrier to dignity, independence, and quality of life.

Through our intervention, Nightrose received a more suitable wheelchair and improved living conditions. This marked the beginning of a new chapter. For the first time in years, she was able to move more freely, engage with her surroundings, and regain a sense of independence in her daily routine.

Her story reminds us that access to appropriate assistive devices can transform lives not just physically, but socially and economically.

Why Local Wheelchair Fabrication Matters

While Nightrose’s situation improved, her journey also highlights a deeper systemic challenge: many wheelchairs available in Uganda are imported, often poorly suited to local terrain, and difficult to maintain.

This is why the Sapphire Africa Foundation is launching a local wheelchair fabrication initiative a sustainable, community-driven solution designed to address these gaps.

Through this initiative, we aim to:

Design and produce durable, terrain-appropriate wheelchairs tailored to local environments

Provide customized mobility solutions based on individual needs

Establish local repair and maintenance networks to ensure long-term usability

Create livelihood opportunities through training local artisans

For beneficiaries like Nightrose, this means access to a wheelchair that is not only functional but built specifically for her needs and environment ensuring greater comfort, durability, and independence.

At Sapphire Africa Foundation, we believe that mobility is a fundamental right. It is the gateway to healthcare, education, economic participation, and social inclusion.

Nightrose’s story is just one of many but it represents the impact that is possible when communities are supported with the right tools and solutions.
